Líneas de investigación

Nuestro grupo de investigación está interesado en la genética de la vid, y en particular en dos aspectos de gran relevancia: la estimación y caracterización de la diversidad genética existente (a nivel de especie, subespecie y variedad) y el estudio de los mecanismos genéticos responsables del desarrollo reproductivo de la vid, centrado en caracteres con impacto en la producción y en la calidad de la uva y del vino.

Nuestra aproximación se basa en explorar, caracterizar y utilizar la variación genética natural que existe en la vid y en desarrollar y emplear herramientas genéticas y genómicas que permitan llegar a conocer la base genética y molecular de la variación fenotípica observada.

Para ello desarrollamos dos líneas de actividad principales:

1. Prospección, obtención, conservación y caracterización genética y fenotípica de recursos genéticos de vid de todo el mundo: vides silvestres, variedades, variantes somáticas (incluyendo clones) y progenies segregantes. Esta línea se asienta sobre la base del correcto genotipado de estos recursos a través del uso de marcadores moleculares (SNP y/o microsatélites). La base de datos de marcadores SNP obtenida en nuestro grupo tras el análisis de miles de muestras de vid permite la catalogación adecuada de los recursos genéticos, y es esencial para la identificación varietal y la determinación de sinonimias y homonimias. Asimismo, esta base de datos genética nos permite abordar estudios históricos como la domesticación de la vid silvestre, el origen genético de las variedades, sus relaciones de parentesco, o las migraciones de variedades de vid.

Otro objetivo de esta línea es proveer de nuevos recursos genéticos para el estudio del control genético de caracteres agronómicos relevantes, incluyendo la búsqueda de variantes somáticas, la generación de progenies de cruzamientos y autofecundaciones, la prospección de variedades y la creación de colecciones nucleares, así como su fenotipado durante varios años para los caracteres de interés.

2. Estudio de la base molecular de la variación para caracteres de interés agronómico. Entre ellos se incluyen la fertilidad, la precocidad, la floración y el cuajado, la arquitectura y compacidad del racimo, el color, el tamaño y la forma de la baya o la presencia de semillas. El objetivo de esta línea consiste en la búsqueda de genes y polimorfismos genéticos responsables de la variación natural para estos caracteres utilizando los recursos genéticos disponibles y herramientas como la transcriptómica, genómica, análisis de QTLs y de asociación genética.

Las herramientas y el conocimiento generado en estas líneas de investigación tienen aplicación directa inmediata en la identificación varietal o en el seguimiento del desarrollo de la vid o de su respuesta a distintas condiciones ambientales o de cultivo. Asimismo, son de aplicación en los programas de selección de clones y de obtención de nuevas variedades, así como en la mejora de las prácticas culturales, todo ello enfocado a dar respuesta a los nuevos retos de la viticultura presente y futura.
