PAWER-WINE Project. Industrial prototype PAW generator for the decontamination of materials from the wine industry

Researchers of P2ML and GESVIN Groups from the UR and ICVV, participate in the PAWER-WINE Project. This project corresponds to the 2022 call for the Public “Proof of Concept” Projects, belonging to the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2021-2023 to Promote Scientific-Technical Research and its Transfer, and within the Framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. The PDC2022-133242-I00 project has a total budget of 149.500,00 € and a duration of 2 years.

The main objective of the PAWER-WINE project is the design and manufacture of an industrial prototype PAW generator that allows the implementation of oak barrel sanitization (Brett) and cork stopper decontamination (TCA) treatments in real production facilities in the wine industry. To achieve this, once the prototype has been designed and built, the PAW generation system will be optimized in order to increase the concentration of the reactive species responsible for biological and chemical decontamination. Likewise, the capacity of the generated PAW for Brett sanitization of oak barrels and TCA decontamination of cork stoppers will be validated. It should be noted that an industrial prototype PAW generator with the characteristics proposed in the project would allow the industrial scale-up of numerous successful results obtained in laboratories around the world over the last 10 years. Potential sectors that could benefit from this project are agri-food (meat curing, food and packaging sanitization, pesticide elimination, seed germination, etc.), biomedical (disinfection of surgical material and wounds, cancer treatments, etc.) and wastewater treatment.
