On March 26 and 27, 2025, the third meeting of the cross-border European project VITRES (Resilient Viticulture in the POCTEFA Territory) was held in Logroño at the Instituto de Ciencias de la Vid y del Vino (ICVV). The main objective of the meeting was to continue developing shared strategies to improve grapevine plant production and promote more sustainable management systems in the face of current climate challenges.
Over the course of two days, members of the consortium—comprising academic institutions, research centers, and companies from Spain and France—evaluated the latest results from ongoing trials. In particular, they discussed progress in pruning techniques and graft formation, as well as the implementation of various training systems, all of which are key elements in enhancing vineyard resilience to extreme weather conditions such as drought and high temperatures. Technical aspects related to plant health and the prevention of fungal trunk diseases were also addressed, as these are priority challenges to ensure the longevity and productivity of vineyards within the POCTEFA area.
The meeting also served to strengthen cross-border collaboration among the participating entities, which share knowledge, methodologies, and experimental results with the common goal of providing innovative solutions for the wine sector.
The VITRES project has a budget of €1.78 million, 65% of which is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Interreg VI-A Spain–France–Andorra programme (POCTEFA 2021–2027). With a planned duration of three years, the project aims to reinforce economic and environmental integration in the cross-border area through sustainable and collaborative agricultural practices. Coordinated by the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), the project consortium also includes INRAE (Bordeaux), the Chambers of Agriculture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Pyrénées-Orientales, the companies Vitis Navarra and Viticultura Viva, and the ICVV, host of this third meeting.
