More than 230 experts in grapevine physiology and biotechnology joined the Open International Conference on Grapevine Physiology and Biotechnology 2024 in Logroño

Organized by the Institute of Grapevine and Wine Sciences (ICVV) in Logroño, more than 230 world experts joined the Open International Conference on Grapevine Physiology and Biotechnology 2024 (Open GPB 2024) to discuss the latest advances in grapevine physiology and biotechnology. Throughput one week of vivid discussions, the Open GPB 2024 became a scientific forum in which scientists and professionals of the grape and wine sector exchanged their experiences to face current viticultural challenges, many of them derived from the current climate situation. Among other topics, they presented the latest results of international investigations aimed to understand how the grapevine behaves under a changing environment, as well as how new biotechnological tools can aid to solve part of the problem, contributing to improve the sustainability of the grapevine and winemaking sector.

The conference was organized into eight dedicated scientific sessions in which 57 oral communications and 147 posters were presented. Additionally, each session was preceded by a keyntoe lecture in which an internationally relevant expert provided an up-to-date overview of the state of the art of the topic of each session. It is worth highlighting the opening lecture of the conference, offered by Dr. Jaume Flexas, professor of Plant Physiology at the University of the Balearic Islands. In his opening conference, Dr. Flexas discussed the diverse adaptation mechanisms developed by plants growing in extreme environments, such as deserts or polar regions. Likewise, the closing conference given by Dr. Antonio Granell (researcher at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants, CSIC-UPV)) discussed how new biotechnology tools are improving fruit quality and production traits in other model species, and how the grapevine can benefit from these scientific advances.

As a differential feature with previous meetings on the topic, the Open GPB 2024 relied on the principles of Open Science to communicate the advances discussed at the conference as soon as possible, to increase the scientific impact of the conference in the sector and society. To this aim, the Open GPB 2024 was supported by the International Viticulture and Enology Society (IVES) and the IVES Conference Series platform for the publication of the abstracts of the works presented at the conference. This way, the Open GPB 2024 has moved forward towards the broad and fast dissemination of knowledge of grapevine physiology and biotechnology.
